MEF2C |
Mef2C is a muscle regulatory transcription factor that has been implicated in
the regulation of Glut4 in muscle. It has also been implicated as an important
transcription factor in muscle fiber-type switching, involved in the
specification of type 1 fibers. This is crucial in diabetes because type 1 fibers
have a much greater insulin sensitivity than type 1 fibers. In addition, recent
data has shown that the key transcritional coactivator PGC1alpha can stimulate a
complete program of trans-differentiation of muscle fibers from type 2b to type
2a and type1. Analysis of relevant gene promoters has indicated that MEF2C is an
important docking site for PGC-1alpha to execute this program.
